Training Tips

We have some great training tips from some of New Zealand's top athletes to help you get ready for the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon. Check out the tips below to make sure you are ready to hit the start line. Also remember to log in to your My TRY account to get your own personal training schedule.

Swimming Tips

  • First of make sure you have a good pair of goggles. Don't forget to use Speedo anti-fog solution in your goggles as there is nothing worse than not being able to see where you are going! (but remember, new Speedo goggles already contain anti-fog so this won't be necessary if your goggles are new).
  • Before the swim, find landmarks to aim for; this will help you navigate the course. There are great big buoys for you to swim around at Weet-Bix Tryathlon events, so these might be a good target!
  • Make sure you look up every few strokes when you're swimming to ensure that you are staying on course.
  • And remember, there are many trained lifeguards both in the water with you and on the beach or the side of the pool at Weet-Bix Tryathlon events.

Cycling Tips

  • Wear a helmet for every ride. Make sure the helmet is safe and in the right position on your head - the thickness of two fingers between the strap and your chin is a good way to ensure the helmet is not too loose.
  • Conduct an ABC Quick Check before every ride: Check the Air, the Brakes and the Chain.
  • Check the height of the seat post - make sure you can touch the ground comfortably.
  • Control your bike by practicing a bike handling skill. Take your bike down to the local park and practise going around corners and changing gears.
  • Make sure your shoelaces are tucked into your shoes so they do not get caught in the chain whilst you are riding.

Running Tips

  • Keep relaxed when you're running
  • Keep your chin and eyes forward (no turning around to look back!)
  • Your arms should swing straight ahead (rather than from side to side as this uses more energy)
  • Make sure you have a comfortable pair of shoes to run in – if you are thinking of getting some new shoes always wear them in and train in them first
  • Start out at a comfortable pace and work into the run - when running up or downhill take shorter steps.
