The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon offers Kiwi kids more than an opportunity to just take part in an exciting sporting event.
This year, we are partnering with Make-A-Wish, who bring a little joy and strength into the lives of children living with a life-threatening illness.
So this year, by taking part in the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon Try for a Wish, you're not just giving it a go for yourselves. You're also giving it a go for kids less fortunate than you. Wish Kids who face each day with courage and uncertainty, and somehow keep smiling.
We encourage all Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon entrants to ask families, friends and neighbours to sponsor you in your event. The aim is not just to achieve your own personal best, but also make dreams come true for kids who are facing the challenge of a life-threatening illness.
About Make-A-Wish
Make-A-Wish grants wishes to children between the ages of 3 and 17 who are living with a life threatening medical condition. Over 160 wishes are granted each year throughout New Zealand. That's a little magic brought into 3 lives per week.
Make-A-Wish can't promise a longer life or recovery. But we do bring comfort, encouragement plus the chance to brighten the lives of these children and their families through unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
The promise of a wish can have a remarkable effect on a sick child and has enormous impact on everyone close to them. A wish gives a child something to look forward to through their many months of treatment. Granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions is a real privilege and a very special journey for everyone involved.
The aim of Try for a Wish is to grant the wishes of sick kids in your local area. Build your own fundraising page and send it onto all your friends and family to get donations towards your fundraising goal. Alternatively print off a sponsorship form and collect the funds offline. Every cent counts and by sharing in the power of a wish you will be helping a kid in need.
When you register, tick the Join Try For A Wish box and ask your friends and family to sponsor your TRYathlon and be a part of making wishes come true for children in your community.

I wish for school ball shopping spree, Jessica, Aged 17, Manukau
Jessica wanted to go on a shopping spree so she could purchase her dress and accessories to attend her upcoming school ball. So much fun was had with her best friend as they trawled through the local mall picking out all the essentials to ensure it would be a night to remember. As a special extra the Make-A-Wish volunteers organised for Jessica to have her hair and makeup professionally done and a limo picked up her and six of her friends to whisk them off to the venue in true style - Jessica was definitely the belle of the ball!
I wish to be a digger driver, Zane, 4 years old, North Shore
At just four years old, Zane is a budding digger driver and builder. What he doesn't know about road works and building (which he learnt from Bob the Builder and Handymanny) is not worth knowing! Zane had an awesome wish day where he got to be a digger driver, take a ride in a huge Kenworth truck and fitted out with his very own digger driver uniform.
I wish for a shopping spree, Lisa-Marie, 11 years old, Auckland Central
Lisa-Marie couldn't wait for her shopping spree day to arrive, everyone dressed in purple (Lisa-Marie's favourite colour) for the big day. Off to Sylvia Park armed with a shopping list she wasted no time buying all the essentials on her list as well as building a very special teddy at The Teddy Factory. Some of her extended family joined her for a well-deserved break for lunch at Nandos where she refuelled to continue on with her shopping expedition.

I wish for a Nintendo DSi, Georgia, 10 years old, Mount Maunganui
Georgia wrote a special note for the Make-A-Wish volunteers requesting a Nintendo DSi in pink or light blue and a wish list of games she that her friends had or that she had heard were great fun to play. Georgia couldn't wait to start playing her new games with her best friend who came along for the wish delivery.

I wish for a laptop with photoshop software, Amy, Aged 17
Amy knew exactly the type of laptop she wanted. This laptop is to help with her studies with the hope that one day she can make her greatest wish of becoming a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York come true. As a special enhancement to her wish, Amy and her family attended the Canada vs USA Ice Hockey game where she had her photo taken with one of the team captains.
Other wishes granted by Make-A-Wish in the last year include:

I wish to meet Australian Idol Winner Stan Walker, Venessa, Aged 8
Venessa's one true wish was to meet Australian Idol winner Stan Walker. Venessa has a brain tumour that caused her to go blind at the age of 4. She absolutely loves music and the sound of Stan's voice.
Venessa and her family were flown to Auckland to meet Stan. Stan gave Venessa a huge hug and even took time to sing a few songs too!! He was so touched by her that he talked about it on Twitter: This is an Amazing whanau I met 2day. Vanessa in the middle (referring to the photo). Her wish was 2c and meet me!!! Thanku God 4 her.
Stan also gave Venessa tickets and back stage passes to one of his New Zealand concerts! But the giving wasn't just one way. Generous to a fault, Vanessa presented Stan with her own gift of an "I♥tok" T-Shirt, which he absolutely loved! An amazing wish for an awesome young girl!
WELLINGTON
I wish to be a Navy Captain for the day, Kate, Aged 15
Kate is a sea cadet, and has a passion for being on, in or under water and her ultimate wish was to be a Navy Captain for a day.
Make-A-Wish New Zealand arranged for Kate to take part in the Navy's 70th birthday celebrations in Wellington, before she and her mum were taken onboard HMNZS Otago for a 2 day trip from Wellington to Auckland.
Kate was presented with a captain's cap and uniform with her name on it in preparation of taking on the Captain's duties for the day. She was kept busy with her new role, Captain of the HMNZS Otago, taking part in a fire drill, having a ride in a rigid hull inflatable boat, firing shots from a 50 calibre gun (very noisy according to Kate), and then finally taking over the wheel and steering ship too! Kate also got to stay in the captain's cabin while she took over the role, and thought it was fantastic as he had his own fridge and from which she helped herself to some cheese and crackers ... as it was official captain food after all!
But that was not the end of her wish! Once the ship was docked at Auckland, Kate and her mum were met by a limousine to take them to the Navy Museum.
Kate summed the whole experience up as wonderful, fantastic, amazing and something she will re-live over and over again!

I wish for an Apple MacBook laptop, Elliot, Aged 16
Elliot, like most 15 year olds is very interested in all things technological, so it was not a surprise to those who knew Elliot that his wish would involved something along those lines!
Elliot wished for the new Apple MacBook Laptop so he could use it to Skype his sister in the UK and do some video editing too!
Make-A-Wish arranged for Elliot not only to get his much desired new laptop, but also arranged for the entire CD back catalogue of his favourite band Shapeshifter. They were all signed by the band and were given to him to replace the ones he lost in the Christchurch earthquake, when he was in Christchurch hospital receiving treatment at the time.
Elliot was thrilled and really appreciative of everything. He couldn't wait to jump on his new laptop and Skype all his friends!

I wish for my own TV and DVD Player, Brianna, Aged 9
Brianna's one true wish was for her very own TV and DVD player to watch all her favourite shows while she was recovering from treatment at home. Her treatment requires that she spends lots of time in isolation, so a TV was something she wished for to help distract and keep her entertained during this time. Brianna couldn't believe her eyes when the truck pulled up to deliver her wish, her face lit up and kept saying WOW! Is this all for me??
Once it was all inside Brianna was overwhelmed by the new flat screen TV and DVD player and couldn't wait to TRY it out! Make-A-Wish had also organised for some new DVD and CD of her favourite singer Pink. But the final surprise for Brianna was an I-Pad, which she was so excited about and started listing all things she now do more easily! Brianna was so grateful for her wish and couldn't stop thanking everyone for all her gifts!

I wish for a box full of toys, Emma, Aged 3
Emma is one of Make-A-Wish's Wish Box recipients, which is a box overflowing with toys, games, dolls and all things fun and creative for an amazing 3 year old girl. Emma loves unicorns, mermaids and Barbie dolls. So Make-A-Wish arranged for Emma's wish box to themed around all her favourite things, even having her wish box delivered with a giant helium balloon in the shape of a unicorn! Emma's eyes lit up when she saw the unicorn balloon come through the door, and then she was smiling from ear to ear when she saw the box full of toys following behind!
Once Emma realised that it was all for her she swiftly dug in to start opening all her presents, and then playing with each one before moving onto the next one! In the end the pile of presents took up her whole hospital bed and there was barely any room left for her! Emma loved all the toys and found them a great distraction for the remainder of her treatment.
Note: Eligible children aged 3 like Emma, receive a Wish Box. If the child is still medically eligible after their 4th birthday, they are able to apply for a personalised wish at that time.
