Speedo Swimming Q&A

I went to the Commonwealth Games in 2006, and was very pleased to get a Bronze medal. Now, I want to be able to share what I know about swimming to encourage and support Kiwi kids to get out there and give swimming a go. Please feel free to submit any questions you have about swimming, and I’ll answer them for you.

How do I stop my goggles from getting foggy?

I like to race in a new pair of Speedo goggles for ocean swims because I know that they won't fog up. Another great idea is to buy Speedo anti-fog solution which will help stop your goggles from fogging up. Or I have been told that spitting in them and then rinsing them in the salt water before your race helps.

Help! I don’t think I have done enough training. What do I do?

I'm sure you have done sufficient training. Believe in yourself and be confident. If you really haven't done enough training there is nothing you can do now. Just take your time, enjoy yourself and there will be plenty of people to help you if you need it.

What do you do before the race to calm your nerves?

It's important to remember why you are doing the race - because it is fun! If I find myself getting nervous I focus on enjoying my race. The race is the fun part and the training is the hard part.

Do you have any role models?

I don't really have role models but I have great respect and appreciation for our Olympic Gold medallists such as Danyon Loader, Sarah Ulmer, Hamish Carter and the Evers-Swindell sisters. A lot of these athletes endured enormous disappointments in their sporting careers, but came back tougher and stronger than ever to achieve Olympic Gold.

Do you have any inspiration? If so who’s it from?

I'm inspired everyday by the big goals that I have, not a particular person. Goal setting is a really important and fun thing to do. I love working hard to achieve something because when you achieve it it feels amazing. Maybe you want to set some goals for the tryathlon?

Should you do freestyle the whole way or change your strokes?

Freestyle is the fastest stroke and I find it the easiest stroke. If you want to swim as fast as you can then it is probably best to stick to freestyle, but there is nothing wrong with taking your time and doing other strokes if you get tired. A lot of people like to do breaststroke so they can have their head out of the water.

Should we start off fast, medium or slow when we start the 200m race?

It will depend on your abilities as a swimmer. If you are confident and want to be one of the first swimmers out of the water, it is best to start out fast and get some clear water to swim in, as well as being in the front pack. If you are a little nervous about the swim, take your time and ease into it. You can always swim faster toward the end if you have lots of energy left.

What do you eat for breakfast?

I have 2 crushed weetbix with sanitarium muesli sprinkled over the top, trim milk, low fat yogurt and blueberries for antioxidants.

What is the furthest you have ever swum?

The longest race I have ever swum was 10km. It took me 3 hours and I don't think that I will ever do it again.

How can I be as good as you?

Practice makes perfect. Joining your local swim club is a great place to start. You will make great friends, train hard and have a lot of fun.
